SnowCastle, Finland
Where: Kemi, Finland
Official Website: https://experience365.fi/
Every year, thousands of visitors make their way to Kemi, to enjoy all the SnowCastle has to offer before it melts away in the springtime.

The SnowCastle is a popular destination in Finland for those who want to view the aurora borealis.
Since 2015, the Kemi SnowCastle has been rebuilt every single year. It takes an experienced construction crew nearly 6 weeks to reconstruct the work of art. With the help of snow machines, they are able to quickly convert seawater into hardpacked snow. The castle itself covers an area of more than 20,000 square meters, and is over 3 stories tall. The longest length of wall surrounding the SnowCastle is over a kilometer in length.
There are a number of excellent amenities for those who choose to stay in this castle made of ice and snow. Unfortunately, the 2022 rendition of the SnowCastle did not include a SnowHotel to stay in (hopefully it will in future years, as it has in the past), although there are nearby glass igloo and camping options. The most popular attractions are the theater and art gallery, but there is also a children’s adventure land and a Snow Chapel. There are several restaurants that are open throughout the peak season, including the castle lounge which is a popular spot for breakfast.
While there is no longer accommodation at the SnowCastle of Kemi itself, the closest hotels and hostels within comfortable walking distance to it are:
- Seaside Glass Villas (Merenrantahuvilat)
- Villa Kemi
- Scandic Kemi

Final Thoughts on Ice & Igloo Hotels Northern Lights Accommodation
Although many people have a passing curiosity about ice hotels, there seems to also be a lot of fear about staying in one. Maybe it’s the challenge that makes it so appealing. However, if you do decide to stay overnight, you will probably find the actual experience isn’t quite as frightening as it may seem.
I personally slept in an ice hotel in Lapland at Snowman World in Rovaniemi. Snowman World is not on this list because it seems like they no longer offer accommodation, although they still have an ice bar and a snow fun park.
To be honest, I wouldn’t say it was comfortable, but comfort isn’t really the point. The point is the challenge, plus bragging rights to your friends and family afterwards! After all, you are sleeping on a mattress which is literally a slab of ice. It’s not comfortable, but they make sure that you are equipped with incredibly warm bedding so there is no risk of you freezing.
If you are making a trip to see the Northern Lights, incorporating a stay at an ice hotel or igloo hotel is a great way to cap off your vacation. I’ve slept in an ice hotel once and have no desire to do it again. I would certainly recommend it just for the fun, but in saying that… one night is probably enough!
